I've had contractors call me from a Surrey jobsite parking lot, quote in hand, asking me to translate it over the phone. Not our quote. Somebody else's. That tells you something. Most quotes for flashing and custom metal work read like they were written to confuse, not clarify. Knowing how to read a metal fabrication quote is a skill nobody teaches you, but it's the difference between comparing three numbers apples-to-apples and getting blindsided by a $1,800 change order in week three.
Twenty-plus years bending metal in Delta, and I still see GCs and siding crews get burned by the same three things: vague profile descriptions, hidden minimums, and finish codes nobody bothered to explain. Let's take a real quote apart, piece by piece, the way I'd do it at my own desk before I sign off on a job.
The anatomy of a line item
A clean line item on a flashing or forming quote has five things, always. Profile name, developed width, gauge, finish, and unit pricing with quantity. Miss any one of those and you're not comparing quotes, you're comparing guesses.
Here's what a real one looks like:
Custom sill flashing, 2-piece hemmed profile, developed width 11", 26 ga Galvalume, PVDF 2-coat, colour match to Hardie Iron Grey, qty 340 LF, $6.25/LF
Break that down. "Custom sill flashing" tells you the application. "Developed width 11 inches" is the flat pattern width before it goes through the press brake, and it matters because that's what drives your material cost, not the finished face dimension. A profile that looks identical on paper can eat 9 inches or 15 inches of coil depending on how many bends and hems are in it. If a competitor's quote doesn't list developed width, ask for it. It's the single number that explains why one quote is 40% cheaper than another for what looks like the same part.
Gauge and finish get their own sections below because they deserve it. But the last piece, quantity and unit pricing, is where most confusion starts.
Per linear foot vs per piece, and why it changes everything
Flashing quotes get priced two ways: per linear foot (LF) or per piece. Neither is wrong, but they're not interchangeable, and shops that quote one way while your other bids quote the other way make comparison miserable unless you convert everything to the same basis first.
Per-LF pricing makes sense for continuous runs, roll-formed drip edge, long parapet cap, anything coming off a roll former in one straight shot. Per-piece pricing shows up on short-run, hand-brake work, custom step flashing, pieces with multiple hems and returns where setup time per piece matters more than length.
Here's the trap. A quote at $4.10/LF looks better than one at $6.25/LF until you notice the cheap one is priced on a 7-inch developed width profile with no hem, and the expensive one has a double-hemmed edge and a 30-degree kick for positive drainage. Different part, same name. On a recent Richmond project we had a contractor bring us a competitor's quote for "custom drip edge" at what looked like a steal, and it turned out to be a 3-inch leg with no hem at all, functionally a different product than what his architect specified. My rule: convert everything to cost-per-linear-foot for apples-to-apples, but only after confirming the developed width and hem detail match across quotes. Otherwise you're comparing a Honda Civic quote to a Civic Si quote and calling them the same car.
Reading the gauge callout
Gauge callouts look simple and get misread constantly. "24 ga" and "26 ga" aren't just numbers, they're a decision about long-term performance versus upfront cost, and the gap between them is bigger than people think. 26 gauge steel runs roughly 0.018" thick. 24 gauge runs about 0.024". Doesn't sound like much until you're standing on a windy roof in North Vancouver watching 26 ga oil-can in the sun.
Cost difference between the two gauges typically runs 15-25% on the material line, more if the profile has long flat pans that need the extra stiffness to avoid oil-canning. On copper and stainless, gauge swings hit even harder because the base material cost is so much higher per pound.
If your quote just says "26 ga" with no substrate noted, that's a red flag on its own. Steel, aluminum, and Galvalume all get called out in gauge, but they don't perform the same at the same number. What drives gauge selection on a real job
- Wind exposure and panel span, especially waterfront sites in White Rock or exposed Fraser Valley locations near Abbotsford
- Foot traffic or maintenance access over the flashing, roof hatches and mechanical curbs need heavier stock
- Substrate: aluminum needs to run heavier gauge than steel for the same stiffness, roughly two gauge sizes
- Architectural exposure, a highly visible parapet cap on a Mount Pleasant commercial job gets scrutinized differently than a hidden step flashing
Finish codes: PVDF, polyester, and what the colour code actually means
This is where quotes get lazy most often. "Painted finish, colour to match" tells you nothing. There are two coating families doing almost all the work in BC construction: PVDF (often sold as Kynar 500) and SMP or polyester. PVDF holds colour and chalk resistance for 20-plus years under UV, polyester fades faster and chalks sooner, usually within 8-10 years on south-facing exposures. Cost gap between the two is usually $0.40-0.80/LF on standard profiles, more on deep colours and metallics.
A clean finish line reads something like: "PVDF 2-coat, colour Ash Grey, custom match to sample #4471." If your quote just says "painted" with no coating system named, ask which one, and ask for the colour code, not just a paint chip description. Substrate matters here too. PVDF over Galvalume performs differently than PVDF over aluminum in coastal salt air, which is a real consideration for anything going up in Delta or Richmond near the water. A quote that skips the substrate under the finish code is asking you to trust a black box.
Shop minimums and setup charges
Every shop has a minimum. Ours does too, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Setup on a press brake, tooling changeover, and material handling all cost real time whether you order 20 feet or 2,000. Most Lower Mainland shops run somewhere between $150-350 in setup or minimum order charges per unique profile, and that charge is often buried in the line item rather than broken out, which makes small orders look artificially expensive compared to big ones.
Here's how you avoid getting nickel-and-dimed on minimums: batch your profiles. If you've got three small jobs in Coquitlam needing the same step flashing profile, order them together instead of three separate small POs. One setup charge instead of three. We tell contractors this constantly, and it's the single easiest way to knock 10-15% off a small-quantity quote without touching material cost at all.
Ask the shop directly: "what's your minimum, and is it itemized or rolled into the unit price?" A shop that can answer that in one sentence knows their own costing. Red flags that turn into change orders
I've seen the same five vague-quote problems cause the same change orders for two decades. Watch for these:
- No developed width listed. You can't verify material cost or compare quotes without it.
- "Standard gauge" instead of a number. Standard to who? Every shop's default is different.
- Finish listed as "painted" with no system or colour code. This always turns into an argument at delivery.
- No substrate named on flashing, just "metal." Steel, aluminum, and Galvalume price and perform differently, and pretending they're interchangeable is how oil-canning complaints happen six months post-install.
- Quantity based on a rough takeoff with no site verification note. If the quote doesn't flag that final quantities depend on field measure, expect a change order the second actual dimensions don't match the drawing.
None of these are dealbreakers by themselves. But two or three together on one quote tells me the shop is quoting fast and figuring out the details later, usually at your expense, on your schedule, mid-install.
What a clean RFQ actually buys you
The fastest way to get a comparable, trustworthy quote is to send a clean request in the first place. That means a sketch or drawing with dimensions, the substrate you want priced, gauge preference if you have one, and a finish reference, even just a photo of the existing cladding colour.
