When does aluminum flashing make sense?
When weight matters. Aluminum is far lighter than steel, which counts on long pieces and on anything handled overhead.
It also doesn't rust. Aluminum grows its own thin oxide skin, so a scratch or a cut edge won't bleed rust down the wall.
The trade-off is stiffness. Aluminum is softer than steel and dents more easily, so thickness matters more here.
One rule on site: keep aluminum from touching copper or pressure-treated lumber. Both corrode it. Put a membrane between them.
0.032" or 0.040" aluminum flashing?
Aluminum is sold by thickness in inches, not by gauge. The two common thicknesses on our order form are 0.032" and 0.040".
The 0.040" sheet is stiffer. It keeps a flatter face on wide flashing and long runs. The 0.032" is lighter and easier to work, and it suits smaller trim.
Other thicknesses: write the number on the drawing and we'll confirm it with the quote.
Colours for prepainted aluminum flashing
Prepainted aluminum comes in two coatings. The PVDF range has seven colours: Polar White, Champagne, Weathered Zinc, Dark Bronze, Slate Grey, Charcoal and Black. The polyester range has five: Ultra White, Van Trailer White, Commercial White, Commercial Brown and Commercial Black.
That's a short list next to steel. If your cladding colour isn't on it, prepainted steel flashing is the easier match; the Classic SMP range alone has 40 colours.

Is aluminum or steel better for flashing?+
Steel for most exterior work: Galvalume, galvanized or prepainted, with far more colours. Aluminum when weight matters, or when a rust streak from a cut edge would be a problem.
What thickness of aluminum flashing should I order?+
0.040" for wide faces and long pieces, 0.032" for smaller trim. Those two are the common ones on our order form. For anything else, note it on the drawing and we'll confirm.
What colours does prepainted aluminum come in?+
Seven PVDF colours and five polyester colours, from whites through Dark Bronze to Black. The full PVDF list is on our Signature colours page. Ask for a physical chip before you commit a whole building to one.
Can aluminum flashing touch treated wood?+
Not directly. The copper in pressure-treated lumber corrodes aluminum over time. Put a membrane or another separator between them.
